Background and Overview
“Every change is a loss and every loss must be grieved”- Carl Jung
“Making difficult matters mentionable is the best way to make them manageable”– Carl Rogers
Grief is our internal response to separation and loss. In our culture, there is a great amount of pressure to minimize the feelings of grief and to get back to “normal.” Grief is mistakenly viewed as a temporary problem. It is not a problem. It is normal reality for people dealing with loss and/or separation.
Adolescents are at a fragile time when loss is experienced. Often their outward behavior and talk may be bravado attempting to cover that fragility. Life is complicated for any teen, but for bereaved teenagers, the complications are greatly intensified. When they gain insight into their own grief process and have a safe place to express grief, they can find relief from the emotional pain.
Sharing with other teens in a safe and caring environment can ease the tension, soothe the fright, and fill the isolation. It is immensely beneficial to know that “I’m not the only one who feels this way.”
It is the goal of this one day session to help teens recognize and explore grief and acquire tools that promote healing.
The sessions seek to help teens in attendance to:
1. Identify the causes of grief
2. Identify and acknowledge feelings related to grief
3. Learn and acquire healthy as well as creative ways to externalize grief and express ongoing love connections
4. Acquire strategies of self- care that promote the healing process.
